Les photographies de Martin Parr peuvent nous mettre mal à l’aise. De fait, il examine nos vies avec minutie, tournant en dérision nos habitudes alimentaires, vestimentaires et touristiques. Pour certains, il exploite notre manque de goût et de jugement dans des photographies sans fard et, ces dernières années, met en lumière par des choix chromatiques éclatants nos menues vanités. D’autres, dont la vision est peut-être plus politique et moins centrée sur l’éthique de la photographie ; un débat typiquement britannique, soutiennent qu’il enregistre simplement une myriade de maux sociaux : le relâchement des liens communautaires, l’enthousiasme pour la société de consommation, la recherche frénétique de loisirs et de tourisme planétaire, la foire aux vanités de la classe moyenne anglaise et la fantasmagorie de la sous-classe apparue en Grande-Bretagne dans les années 1980. Comme beaucoup d’enfants élevés en banlieue dans les années 1950 et 1960, Martin Parr est un outsider, sans attaches, sans appartenances ni réelles sympathies politiques. Quand il quitte le Surrey pour étudier la photographie à Manchester Polytechnic, c’est un voyage capital qu’il effectue, abandonnant le confort monotone de la grande banlieue d’Epsom pour l’immense métropole de Manchester.
Martin Parr’s photographs can make us feel uncomfortable. Indeed, he scrutinises our lives, mocking our eating, dressing and touring habits. For some, he exploits our lack of taste and judgement in unvarnished photographs and, in recent years, highlights our petty vanities with vivid colour choices. Others, whose vision is perhaps more political and less focused on the ethics of photography; a typically British debate, argue that he is simply recording a myriad of social ills: the loosening of community ties, the enthusiasm for consumer society, the frenzied pursuit of leisure and global tourism, the English middle-class vanity fair and the phantasmagoria of the underclass that emerged in Britain in the 1980s. Like many children raised in the suburbs in the 1950s and 1960s, Martin Parr was an outsider, with no ties, no allegiances or real political sympathies. When he left Surrey to study photography at Manchester Polytechnic, it was a momentous journey, leaving the monotonous comfort of suburban Epsom for the huge metropolis of Manchester.

Martin Parr (né en 1952) est un des photographes documentaires les plus connus de sa génération. Il est une figure clé du monde de l’art à la fois pour son travail photographique et pour son implication comme commissaire d’exposition. En 2017, il a ouvert la Martin Parr Foundation à Bristol, destinée à promouvoir la photographie documentaire britannique. Membre depuis 1994 de l’agence Magnum, dont il a également été président de 2013 à 2017, il a publié plus d’une centaine de livres. Son œuvre fait partie de plusieurs collections muséales majeures et a fait l’objet d’une rétrospective à la National Portrait Gallery de Londres en 2019. Martin Parr est représenté par kamel mennour, Paris/London.
Martin Parr (born 1952) is one of the best known documentary photographers of his generation. He is a key figure in the art world both for his photographic work and for his involvement as a curator. In 2017 he opened the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol, dedicated to promoting British documentary photography. He is member of the Magnum agency since 1994, of which he was also president from 2013 to 2017. He has also published more than 100 books. His work is included in several major museum collections and has been the subject of a retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2019. Martin Parr is represented by kamel mennour, Paris/London.
